Inspired by the immigrants who against all odds, built our city in the early 1900s.
The Japanese community settled in the downtown Eastside called Tokyo town. It was a tough life and a daily struggle - some travelled for
hours to work in the canneries or on fishing boats in Steveston (and settled there too) to make a enough to survive.
Baseball was there place to be free, show their skills, be independent but also gain respect in their new communities, it was their identity.
The Vancouver Asahi Baseball Team won multiple regional and city
league championships, but most importantly they won the respect of their competitors and gave their community a source of pride in a rough period of time.
